Weekly Update: Dec 19-23 & Holiday Wishes

Weekly Post: Dec 12-16


Updates/Reminders: 
*Homework due Monday
*Library on Tuesday
*Christmas Spirit Week:
Monday: Christmas Characters (ex.Santa), Tuesday: Christmas Best for Church, Wednesday Christmas Sweaters, Thursday Red, White & Green, Friday Pajama Day
*Thursday is the Advent Breakfast at 8:30 followed by the Christmas Concert.

Math: Working on graphing. We explored pictographs and bar graphs this week. We even made some predictions!

Language: The internet gave us some problems trying to complete our biographies so no stressed if your child isn't finished revising & editing. We also focused on finding the main idea in some short stories.



Science: We launched our Egg Protectors with great success!

In Art we started making our Candy Cane collaborations:

Weekly Post: December 5-9



Last week was a blur - I forgot to post my weekly update!!

General Reminders:
*Homework due Monday
*No library this week
*Shopping Day on Thursday

Math: We focused on analyzing data. Specifically finding the Range, Mean, Median, and Mode. We took some notes and did some fun activities to reinforce what we learned. See below for our Stacking Cup Challenge.

Language: We started filling in our graphic organizers on our famous/notable people. Students should remember to use the revising and editing skills we have been practicing.

Science: We have been creating our Egg Protectors which will launch on Tuesday!

Weekly Update: Nov. 28 - Dec. 2


It's the most wonderful month of the year! Happy December!

Can you tell I am excited for Christmas!?

Language: Today we started talking about Biographies. We reviewed a biography written about Thomas Prince. We will take this information to write our own biography about famous/notable people next week.

Math: Today we wrapped up our Geometry Unit and we will begin Data Management next week.

General reminder:
*Monday homework is due
*Tuesday is our library day

Science: We have been talking about FORCE.We learnt about Isaac Newton. Ask your child what a newton is. Next week we will be using spring scales to measure force and start designing some structures.

Weekly Update: Nov 21-25


What a great week it has been! We had a guest in to learn more about how Chromebooks can help us become better writers and a presentation on Bullying. We had a practice lockdown today which all students took very seriously.

As this was Bullying Awareness Week, I challenged students to fill in post-its about kindness they did or saw around the school:


Math: We have been reviewing geometric shapes and working on our protractor skills!


Science: Matter tests came home yesterday to be signed. We are starting FORCES ACTING ON STRUCTURES today!

Weekly Update: November 14-18


What a week it has been. Above average temperatures & a short week for the students!

The Remembrance Day ceremony last week was so touching.



Language: We have been reading about Genies this week. Ask your child if they meet the Genie criteria! Next Monday and Tuesday we will be presenting our newspaper articles to the class. I will be assessing their ORAL presentation, rather than the written part. So PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Math: We will be finishing up our Patterning Unit this week and moving on to Geometry. There will not be an official test for this unit. Ask your child to explain what a pattern rule is.

Science: We will be having our Matter TEST on Wednesday next week. Students will be encouraged to bring home their Science duotangs to study from. Our next unit will be Forces Acting on Structures where we will be doing a lot of hands on/building activities.

Weekly Update: November 7-11


Happy Tuesday All!

We had a guest in this morning to teach our class some cool features to use on the Chromebooks. She was SO impressed with how well we sang O'Canada!

The Grade 5s are in charge of the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday. Here was the message sent out on Mr. Slack's update:

Remembrance Day Ceremony

On Friday we will be having a Remembrance Day ceremony and liturgy here at the school. It will begin at 10:30AM and parents are more than welcome to attend.
If your child is in Guides or Beaver Scouts, they are more than welcome to wear their uniforms on this day to take part in the honour guard.
Students will wear a poppy to the ceremony that Gr. 6 students will be delivering on Friday morning. If you would like to send in a donation for the poppy and the legion.
Language: We have started to explore newspapers and students will be picking an article to analyse and present to the class. Students will be responsible for creating a "speech" and practising it on their own. Your child can show you the assignment in their Google Drive.
Math: We have started our Number Patterning Unit. It is a short unit. Here are some related websites to review with your child:

Science: We will be having our Unit Test soon. We will be doing review in class starting next week and your child will be encouraged to take their duotang home to study. Today's lesson's question: what does solubility mean? Is salt soluble in water?
I am looking forward to meeting with you tomorrow at the parent-teacher interviews.

November 1st - Clay Sculptures


Religion: I wanted to share an activity that we did in Religion today. The class listened to a story with their eyes closed in hopes of visualizing a scene. They then created a design and made their design in clay. I was so impressed with the vibrant imaginations and creative creations. See below!

Weekly Update Oct 24-28

Happy (snowy) Friday! I can't believe the snow lasted the night....I am  not ready for winter!

General reminders:

  • Please do not send treats on Monday to be shared with the class. The Chamois family will be supplying cupcakes that are safe for everyone to eat. Thank you Chamois family!
  • Halloween Monster Bash is Monday. Students can wear costumes but please no masks, props and not too scaaaary

Language: Today is the last day for students to work on their comparative writing assignment. We are focusing on editing...edit, edit, edit!!

Math: This week we have focused on division and how it it used in the real world. Students had to solve problems related to a theater opening.
We will be having a math unit test on Tuesday (place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) 

Science: This week we talked about the physical properties (ex. mass) of matter. Ask your child to name a few (we spoke about 8) and explain what they mean.

Happy Friday!


Today we had the PGL teacher from St. Brother Andre come and run a STEM activity with our class and Mrs. Fahey's class. The challenge was to deliver supplies safely from Ontario to a depot on the other side of the river in Shoal Lake 40, Manitoba without contaminating the supplies in the contaminated river water.

Weekly Update Oct 17-21



We had a busy week!

Language:Nearing the end of our analyzing unit, we are working on writing a comparative essay. Students picked their topics and brainstormed supporting ideas today. We have a special guest coming in tomorrow and we will be continuing our writing on Monday.



Math: We have been using vertical learning spaces to practices our math skills. We can see students working collaboratively to solve multiplication problems.


 Science: Today we had our States of Matter Quiz. Earlier in the week we cycled through stations to solidify our knowledge on solids, liquids, and gases.

Weekly Update: October 11-14

Language: This week we have been talking about the 1800s settlers and analyzing the hardships that the settlers would have had. Mr. Oh brought in a snowshoe made of real animal sinew.



Math: We have been working on multiplying this week. We rotated through stations working on different ways of multiplying. We will be having a quiz on Tuesday on:
  • 2 digit by 1 digit  34 x 2
  • 2 digit by 2 digit  56 x 72
Practicing making multiplication arrays using base ten blocks

Weekly Recap: September 26-30


Happy October !

Language: We have been working towards writing 3 BIG  MAC paragraphs about spiders. We started by asking questions that we would like answered and began our research using the chromebooks. Ask your child what makes a great paragraph (topic sentence, 3 supporting sentences, concluding sentence).

Math: We had our first quiz on Friday. I am asking that you please initial the quiz Monday when I return them to the students.This week we will be tackling multiplication and division...oh my!

Science: Ask your child why water is the most unique substance on Earth.

Weekly Recap: Sept 19-23

The whole school doing the CHA CHA SLIDE, Cross Country Running Tryouts, Terry Fox Walk and the Super Staff Mega Rally...What a WILD week it has been!!

Math: We have moved on from Place Value and have been estimating and adding. Ask your child to add 4734 + 2335 using one of the strategies learned in class.

Language Arts: We analyzed a book about Spiders and will be working towards creating a report of our own next week.

Science: We had a mini quiz on the Scientific Method. Initial the quiz and have your child bring it back Monday, We have been talking about the different types of Matter (anything with a mass and that takes up space). Ask your child to give you some examples!

Art: We finished our quilts and will be bringing them home asap!

A Matter of Fact: Science Update

Today in Science, we started our unit on Matter. We read a book on Matter and brainstormed as we went...
I am very pleased with all the wonderful ideas we came up with. From there, we created title pages to get us excited about what is to come in this unit.

Congratulations all on making it through the first day back to school! We spent most of today learning about our classmates and will continue this theme throughout the week.
